Name change

Every name change needs to be declared officially to the Consulate. This is valid for name changes: adding or removing (a part of a name), or changing its order.

Name changes before 01.01.2018

If you are Belgian, the name change done according to Israeli law will have no effect on your name according to Belgian law. If you want to change your name according to the Belgian law (on your Belgian documents), you will have to start a procedure with the competent authorities in Belgium. This is not a procedure where the Consulate assists. You will find more information in French and Dutch

Name changes after 01.01.2018

If you are Belgian and are living in Israel, your name change done according to Israeli law will have influence on your name according to Belgian law, if the local procedure for changes was respected. Therefore you will have to submit the evidence of your name change.
 

1. Documents

The following documents need to be submitted:

1. Name changes before 01.01.2018
   
   Your name will not change with the Belgian authorities but you will have to introduce documents for the Consulate to be able to identify you. (Documents do not need to be translated or legalised).
   • An attestation of name change from the Israeli authorities (Misrad HaPnim);
   • or, a population extract (tamtsit rishum memirsham ha’ochlusin) with the history of names issued by the Israeli authorities. Recommended when you had several name changes;
   • or, your Israeli Teudat Zeut and sefah mentioning the old and new name;
      
2. Name changes after 01.01.2018
    
   • An attestation of name change from the Israeli authorities (Misrad HaPnim);
   • or, a population extract (tamtsit rishum memirsham ha’ochlusin) with the history of names issued by the Israeli authorities. Recommended when you had several name changes

Please pay attention:

• all documents need to comply with the conditions mentioned in point 2,
• the documents need to show the old and new name,
• the spelling used in the translation will be automatically transferred to the future Belgian documents.
   

2. Legalisation and translation

For official Israeli documents:

1. The legalization procedure of an Israeli document is done by obtaining an apostille stamp at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jerusalem (9 Yitzhak Rabin Blvd; Kiryat Ben-Gurion; Jerusalem 9195022; tel: +972.2.5303176; e-mail: Apostille@mfa.gov.il; website: mfa.gov.il
2. Documents need to be translated into one of our national languages (French, Dutch, German). Documents that were issued in English can generally be accepted without a translation (check with the Consulate)
3. Translations need to be legalized as well, NOT by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but by the Ministry of Justice (Bet Mishpat HaShalom- + 972.2.65.45.900).
